The price of high-end timepieces is constantly growing. The cost of limited series models can increase several times in just a decade. Due to the high popularity of luxury products, a huge black market of stolen watches has arisen.
According to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, over 35 million counterfeit watches are produced every year around the world, which is more than the number of real luxury watches! Criminals even mastered watch copying and ‘cloning’. When one checks the authenticity of such watches using serial numbers alone, the lookup results are positive since these numbers may really exist.
How can you check a watch’s origin?
There is no way! Up until now, it was impossible, there was no single watches database.
As a German police officer, I’ve often faced watches or other items theft. Onсe I met friends, who were distributors of many brand watches and had been operating databases for more than 15 years. Another issue is the absence of the unified database monitoring watch service history. For instance, a customer wants to know whether the watch has been repaired and, if repaired, what parts have been used or where the maintenance, if any, has been executed. Without such a database there is no possibility to verify service information, which is of great importance for assessing the watch price.
That evening we came up with an idea of the first decentralized luxury watches database based on Blockchain technology creation world wide. Usually, common citizens don’t have any access to the police databases, therefore a demand for database creation arose — the database which will be available and easy-to-use for everyone.
